Best-value books: The Last Berserker, £1.99
The prices of my 20-odd published books fluctuate and I have never been quite sure why. Sometimes my publisher tells me that they are going to drop the price of a novel to, say, £1.99, for a week or a month, as some kind of special offer, sometimes the price-drop comes as a complete surprise to me (and I think is due to Amazon acting independently according to one of its arcane algorithms). So this is a new feature of my blog in which I tell my readers which if my books is currently discounted and should be snapped up. This week it is The Last Berserker (Fire Born 1), which is now available as an eBook for just £1.99.
It’s a cracking historical adventure novel, one of my best, I think, which is set in northern Europe at the beginning of the Viking age. Bjarki Bloodhand and Tor Hildarsdottir are travelling south into Saxony both hoping to join the ranks of the legendary berserkers, the elite battle-crazed warriors of the Viking world. They travel to a sacred place of the old Germanic religion, the site of the World Tree of the Saxons, the Irminsul, where after various tests and ordeals they hope to be selected to join the ranks of the Fire Born.
However, the mighty Christian king Karolus (aka Charlemagne) invades Saxony, hoping to convert the pagan Saxons to the True Faith at the point of his sword, and Bjarki and Tor are swept up in the wars to defend this beleaguered pagan land from the Frankish invader. It is a gripping yarn, full of battles and action, and The Last Berserker is the first story in a five-novel bestselling Viking adventure series. The last book in the series, Blood of the Bear (Fire Born 5), will be published by Canelo in October 2025.
So that’s it. The Last Berserker is now only £1.99 for the eBook, and £6.99 for the paperback. The audio version is also available – and that’s free if you sign up to an Amazon audio deal. Hope you enjoy it!
